in Santa Fe, a bill to abolish the death penalty in New Mexico has been halted this session.
The Senate Judiciary Committee took no action on the measure during a hearing Wednesday night, effectively shelving the bill.
The measure would have replaced the death penalty with a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
The measure failed the Senate Judiciary committee on a 4-to-5 vote.
The legislation is House Bill 190.
