In the latest in a series of human rights trials related to East Timor's independence in 1999, a senior Indonesian officer appeared in court in Jakarta accused of failing to prevent a massacre of 12 civilians.
Lieutenant Colonel Endar Priyanto is charged with crimes against humanity over the attack by a pro-Jakarta militia group on the home of a pro-independence leader on April 7, 1999 in Dili.
Priyanto, who was military commander of the city at the time, was not required to enter a plea and did not comment on the charges during the hearing. If found guilty, he could face a maximum 20 years in prison or the death sentence.
