In the name of fighting Islamic terrorism Uzbek authorities imprisoned at least 5,000 people, Uzbek human rights advocates said. Dozens of prisoners arrested for their political or religious beliefs have been executed, and more than a dozen more have been tortured to death, activists say. "You can be arrested for being in the wrong place at the wrong time or for being related to the wrong person," said Acacia Shields, a representative in Tashkent of New York-based Human Rights Watch. "If you display suspicious signs of piety, that is enough to get you arrested. Wearing a beard is enough."
