INDIA: DEATH PENALTY TO MAN FOR KILLING WIFE OVER DOWRY

a local court in Kushinagar, India, awarded the death penalty to a husband and life imprisonment to a father in law for murdering a woman for her dowry in the Kotwali area. Fatma Khatoon was married to Yusuf of Indiranagar. She was burnt alive along with her six-month-old girl on May 3, 1999. Judge A K Singh awarded the death sentence to her husband, and pronounced life imprisonment and a Rs 10,000 fine for the father-in-law.
