the Etawah Court in Kanpur, India, sentenced to death five alleged members of underworld don Chhota Rajan’s gang in connection with a 2002 murder. The five, R. Katab Rajan, Duttashree Pandhare, Firoz Taiyyab Tanashah, Chandrakant Sitaram Gurab and Sushil Suresh Tarkhanish, were convicted of murdering Suresh Pal on October 1, 2002.
According to police sources, the story went back to September 3, 2000, when R. Sengar, an Etawah-based lawyer, his wife Shashi Prabha and their two daughters, Indu and Beena, were murdered in their house. Reports said that the murders were due to the family’s dispute with Indu’s husband Suresh Pal Singh, over land owned by them.
Police later arrested Suresh Pal and one Sunil Laiq for their involvement in the murder based on a complaint by the slain couple’s third daughter.
During their trial in Etawah, the two were attacked by the five accused inside the court premises. Suresh Pal died on the spot and Laiq was injured. According to sources, the murder was also linked with the land dispute as the five accused were reportedly eyeing the property. Police found during interrogation that all five hailed from Mumbai and were associated with the Chhota Rajan gang. Police sources said they had at least 40 cases, including murder, registered against them in different cities.
