It was ruled that on August 7, 1997, Diana arrived in Varanasi from Agra and stayed in the Old Vishnu Guest House. She left the guest house on August 10 at 7 am for a trip to Darjeeling. On investigation, it was revealed that Dharam Deo Yadav, a guide of the Old Vishnu Guest House in Varanasi was the last person to be seen with her. On August 19, 1998, police arrested Yadav who under interrogation revealed that he had murdered Diana and buried her in his room.
