India. India will not execute Abu Salem, CBI chief

India agreed not to execute Abu Salem before Portugal extradited him, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director Misra said.
Misra told reporters that India had made it understood that Abu Salem and his companion, Bollywood actress Monica Bedi, would not be subject to the death penalty.
Portuguese police had arrested Abu Salem and Bedi in Lisbon in September 2002. The two had been brought to Mumbai by charter flight.
They were convicted in 2004 on false document charges. Salem was also convicted of resisting arrest and faced charges on eight cases of murder, extortion, forgery and kidnapping.
In July, Portugal's top constitutional court rejected Salem's appeal against his extradition order to India. Portugal's constitution forbids the extradition of suspects to nations where they could face the death penalty. Indian authorities, who had sought Salem and Bedi's extradition since their arrests in Portugal, believed Salem masterminded about a dozen blasts that ripped through Mumbai in March 1993, killing 257 and injuring hundreds more.
