an Indian taxi driver facing trial for murdering his wife was spared the death sentence by a court in Singapore. G. Krishnasamy Naidu, who was earlier handed the death sentence for murdering his wife Chitrabathy Narayanasamy, now faced either 10 years in prison or life behind bars after the court reduced the murder charge to one of culpable homicide.
In 2005, the court accepted the argument that Naidu suffered from morbid jealousy - a form of mental disorder - but found that the illness did not diminish his responsibility during the killing.
This was despite two government psychiatrists' report that the 44-year-old suffered from the mental disorder, stemming from discoveries about his wife's affairs with four different men from 1987 to the time she was killed in May 2004. During the trials, Naidu never denied killing his wife.
