twenty-four Filipino workers were facing the death penalty for murder and drug-related cases, the Philippines Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.
The most recent case was that of a 29-year-old Filipino maid Guen Garlejo Aguilar in Singapore who faced death by hanging if proven guilty of killing a fellow Filipino Jane Parangan La Puebla.
The majority of the 24 death-row inmates were detained in Saudi Arabia and Malaysia for murder and drug-related cases.
Foreign Affairs spokesman Gilbert G.B. Asuque said the Philippine government had forked out funds for the Singaporean lawyer of Ms. Aguilar. The two, according to Labor department officials, appeared to have had a quarrel over a Singaporean taxi driver, that led Ms. Aguilar to kill Ms. La Puebla.
