Andrew Chan, 22, and Myuran Sukumaran, 24, sentenced to death for trafficking heroin in the Indonesian resort island of Bali and seven others given life imprisonment for their involvement in the smuggling ring filed appeals in the Indonesian justice system. The nine members of the smuggling ring were arrested at Bali's airport in April 2005 in a case that provoked anger among some Australians. They criticised the Australian police for tipping off their Indonesian counterparts, exposing the group to the death penalty.
