The application of the death penalty in Indonesia is likely to be made less rigid under proposed amendments to the country's criminal code.
The revision is taking place amid a continuing public debate on capital punishment, as well as a constitutional review of the death sentences imposed on three Australians and two Indonesians for drug offences. A legal expert involved in the formulation of the new draft says while the death sentence will be maintained, there will be greater leeway for sentences to be suspended and commuted to life in prison.
Death sentences would also have to be supported by all members of the jury handling the case concerned, and would expire if not carried out within 10 years.
