Indonesian Army Chief of Staff Ryamizard Ryacudu said he would support the death penalty on undisciplined Army soldiers involved in the attack on the police station in Langkat, North Sumatra province.
The bloody September 28-29 raid on the police killed seven people and injured dozens of others.
"We will take the strictest measures. Undisciplined soldiers might even face death penalty," he was quoted as saying by Detikcom online news service
He added that a joint team of officers from the military, the police and the military-police is grilling over 600 soldiers of the Army's airborne battalion in the Langkat district, around 40 kilometres away from the provincial capital of Medan.
"We'll not cover the problem. Everything must get settlement in transparent ways, otherwise we would keep a 'time bomb'," he said.
The Army chief of staff confirmed that all soldiers in the battalion have been disarmed following the two-day armed conflict between the army and the police.
The conflict claimed the lives of four police officers, an army soldier and two civilians.
Separately, Indonesian Military (TNI) Chief Endriartono Sutarto said in Jakarta that undisciplined soldiers in Langkat will be discharged and brought before the military court.
In the incident army soldiers using grenades and automatic riffles attacked the police after their demand for the release of a soldier arrested for drug possession was rejected.
Since the police was separated from the TNI and became an independent institution, police and soldiers have occasionally clashed. Over the past four years, police and soldiers have been involved in four clashes, killing at least 16 people including civilians.
