Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri called for the death sentence for drug producers and pushers.
She urged judges to "really consider the dangers posed to our children and grandchildren," when passing sentences and said drug abuse was becoming increasingly rampant.
Mrs Megawati was addressing a national seminar on the role of education in anti-drug efforts.
Indonesia already hands down stiff penalties, including the death penalty for drug traffickers, but so far only a few executions have been carried out.
