Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda cited a prosecution call for the death penalty over the killing of a New Zealand soldier as evidence of his Administration's drive for justice.
But at a joint media conference in Auckland, his New Zealand counterpart, Phil Goff, was quick to say that the family of Private Leonard Manning had requested that the United Nations peacekeeper's alleged killer not be put to death.
Dr Wirajuda said that like its New Zealand counterpart, Jakarta was unable to interfere in the judicial process. But state prosecutors had called for the death sentence to be imposed on militiaman and farmer Yacobus Bere, the alleged killer of Private Manning in East Timor in 2000.
