Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri gave her approval for the implementation of the death sentence for drug traffickers.
"Ibu (Madame) Megawati has expressed her support for the implementation of the death sentence for drug abuse, especially for traffickers," the Chairman of the National Drugs Coordination Agency Inspector General Dai Bachtiar said after meeting the president.
Dai was quoted by the Metro TV television station as saying that the president expected everyone's active participation in eliminating drug abuse in the country.
There is strong evidences that Indonesia has become a destination country for drug smuggling instead of just a transit area, and unofficial data shows that drug abuse is on the increase.
