"Innocence and the Death Penalty: The Increasing Danger of Executing the Innocent," a July 1997 report by the Death Penalty Information Center, updated November 24, 1999, indicates that 84 people have been freed from death row since 1973 after evidence of their innocence emerged. Eight of these wrongful convictions were discovered in 1999. A 1987 study by researchers Radelet and Bedau, covering a period between 1900 to 1985, found that 350 people were wrongly convicted of potentially capital offenses; 23 of whom were executed.
