Two ‘protesters’

According to HRANA, citing Mizan, the death sentences of Ali Hemmati Sistani and Majid Nikandish were carried out early this morning, September 30, 2026.

Hemmati Sistani was married and the father of two children, while Nikandish, 25, was from Quchan.

The two young men were arrested in Mashhad during the January 2026 protests and sentenced to death on the charge of “waging war against God” (moharebeh). 

The judiciary has alleged that they were activists and participants on the ground during the protests and were involved in incidents on January 8 in the Tabarsi area of Mashhad that resulted in the deaths of four security personnel.

According to the report, security and law enforcement forces arrested a number of citizens during and after the protests, while others were detained following reviews of footage from city surveillance cameras. Ali Hemmati and Majid Nikandish were among those arrested in this connection, and their cases were referred to judicial authorities.

In its report, Mizan, citing what it described as the “defendants’ confessions,” alleged that during interrogation and judicial proceedings, Ali Hemmati confessed to setting fire to a store, blocking a roadway, and injuring a member of the security forces.

Elsewhere in the report, it was alleged that Majid Nikandish also confessed during interrogation to participating in the protests on January 8 and 9, carrying a knife, damaging public property, and taking part in an attack on a store.

According to the report, following the completion of the investigation and a trial attended by the defendants and their lawyers, Ali Hemmati and Majid Nikandish were sentenced to death. The sentences were subsequently reviewed and upheld by the Supreme Court.

The report did not specify which court handled the case or where the two prisoners were executed. According to Hengaw, the sentences were carried out at Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad.
