Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi said she had been denied permission to stage a rally to protest against the execution of under-18's in the Islamic republic. 
"If a Nobel prize winner is not given a permit to hold a gathering to criticise death penalty verdicts for under-18's, in accordance with the opinion of the juduciary itself, what is the use of the constitution allowing freedom of assembly?" the human rights activist and lawyer asked.
According to Ebadi, current legislation in Iran allowed girls over the age of nine and boys over 15 to be executed. She said the Islamic republic's judiciary agreed that the 1991 law should be amended. "The governor's office said my request for a rally had been refused because a bill to cancel such execution verdicts is due to be submitted to the parliament and therefore there is no need for a gathering," Ebadi told AFP.
