Three key elements of "an international drug smuggling network known as Nicosia" were hanged at dawn, the Tehran revolutionary court said.
The executions were carried out at the Raja'i Prison in the city of Karaj, west of Tehran, after Iran's Supreme Court upheld their death sentence, it said. Members of the gang, including those hanged which the court identified as Keyvan Razzaqi, Kamran Razzaqi and Amin Jannati-Tabar, were involved in narcotic drugs trade "on a broad scale" in Iran as well as Pakistan, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Canada, US and Colombia.
"They were involved in shipping drugs from Afghanistan into Iran, where they distributed some of them in the cities across the country and transferred the remainder to other Asian, European and American countries through Nicosia," the court's public relations office said. It said the network mostly smuggled heroin and cocaine.
