Iranian radio reported that two men charged with attempting to kill the mayor of the Tajik capital Dushanbe in February 2000 were sentenced to death. According to the court they planted a bomb in the official car of Mahmadsaid Ubaydulloyev, Dushanbe's mayor and chairman of the upper house of the parliament, the National Assembly. The mayor was left wounded and Deputy Security Minister Shamsullo Jobirov was killed.
