Jail authorities in Kohat are not allowing a woman sentenced to death for adultery to receive any visits, saying she is a "dangerous prisoner". Zafran Bibi has not been allowed to meet even her mother and brother, and may only do so only after recording her last wish.
Prison staff said that under the jail laws all prisoners who are condemned to death, are regarded as dangerous and are confined to a small cell till the day their death sentence is executed. Zafran was condemned to die by stoning, but it's not clear who will execute the sentence as the prison has no staffers to carry out the task.
Her seventh-month-old baby has also been lodged in the same cell, where conditions are too harsh for a little child in the hot weather. The trial judge termed the baby "case property" to remain in prison till the final judgment to be announced by the Sharia court on appeal.
Defence lawyer Sardar Ali told Dawn that although the judgment was given after his client, Zafran, had confessed to having committed the crime, there still was a lot of room for appeal.
The lawyer said the case was unique in the sense that such punishments had long been abandoned. At least, he added, in the history of Pakistan there were no such examples where a woman, who had been forcibly raped, was condemned to stoning to death and that too at a public place.
