John Burks, 44, black, was executed by lethal injection. Burks was convicted of having killed Jesse Contreras, of Latin-American origin on 20th January 1989. He was the 21st person to be executed in the State during the year, No 220 since the State resumed executions in 1974. He was the 46th to be put to death in the U.S. during the year and No 644 since the death penalty was re-introduced in 1976.
