Juan Rodriguez Chavez was executed inside the Huntsville "Walls" Unit. He was pronounced dead at 6:18 p.m. Chavez, 34, was sentenced to death for the July 3, 1995 murder of Jose Morales, 39. That same night Chavez killed 3 other people, part of a 3-month long crime spree in which he killed 9 people while on parole for a murder he committed in 1985 when he was 17 years old. Chavez becomes the 13th condemned inmate to be put to death this year in Texas and the 27th in the USA.
