Justice Minister Lech Kaczynski declared his "a staunch support for the death penalty" and said he would be favourable to the re-introduction of capital punishment in Poland. The Minister said he is ready to proceed despite the fact that such a move would lead to the revocation of international treaties and conventions that bind Poland to abolish the death penalty. Abolition is one of the main conditions for accession to the European Union, one of the Polish government's main targets. The debate over the death penalty was re-ignited after the murder of a four-year-old boy. A recent poll published by the German magazine Focus revealed that 77% of Poles are in favour of the death penalty.
