In Kenya, two men, who waylaid a motorist and robbed him at Kambiti on Thika-Sagana road in 2009, have been sentenced to hang by a Thika court.
They were found guilty of robbery with violence and handling stolen goods. Cosmus Mutua Mbiti, 29, and Samuel Mutunga Makau, 24, were sentenced by principal magistrate DA Orimba.
The accused were charged that on the night of June 13, 2009 at Kambiti in Murang’a county, armed with pangas, rungus and metal bars, they violently robbed Tony Munene Ruanjau of an assortment of items valued at Sh100,000.
The complainant, a salesman and driver with Nestle Kenya was ferrying goods from Nyeri to Nairobi when the tyres of his car got punctures. A group of thugs surrounded his car, smashed the screens before pulling him out.
They robbed him and stole some of the goods he was carrying.
In his judgment, the magistrate said the prosecution, led by chief inspector Josephine Wambua, had proved its case beyond any reasonable doubt.
The accused were given 14 days to appeal.
