Knesset Member [Herut party Chairman] Mikhael Kleiner says that if [the leader of Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction in the West Bank] Marwan al-Barghuthi is indeed convicted of what he is charged with; namely, the cold-blooded and premeditated murder of many people, then he should be sentenced to death. However, because of Attorney-General Elyaqim Rubinstein's decision, that will not be possible, Kleiner said. Elyaqim Rubinstein has issued instructions to put Al-Barghuthi on trial before a civilian court.
Kleiner said that Al-Barghuthi should have been put on trial before a military tribunal which is empowered to issue death sentences. Kleiner added that although Israeli military tribunals have never issued a death sentence until now, there is always a first time for everything.
