KUWAIT. FILIPINA NOT SENTENCED TO DEATH, SAYS AMBASSADOR

Ricardo Endaya, Ambassador of the Philippines to Kuwait, stated in an interview with Al Watan Daily that, contrary to reports published by a local English daily, Jakatia Pawa, a Filipina domestic worker accused of murdering the daughter of her employer, was not sentenced to death by a Kuwaiti Court and that the arguments of Pawa's lawyers are to be heard on October 12. "I was shocked to see in the newspaper that Pawa had allegedly been sentenced to death and that it had also been broadcast on this network," stated Endaya. He added that after the news was broadcast he personally received calls from the Secretary of Foreign Affairs and the Vice President of the Philippines asking for clarification regarding this issue. Embassy officials immediately met with representatives from the Ministry of Justice who confirmed that no such verdict had been passed. Endaya explained that a local newspaper in Kuwait published the news incorrectly.
