Kuwait's court of appeals upheld the death sentence on a police officer found guilty of shooting dead a female editor in a crowded street. The court rejected the appeal by Lt-Colonel Khaled al-Azmi who was sentenced to death in February 2002.
Lawyers said the Court of Cassation is expected to review the case at a later date for a ruling on legal procedures. Azmi was found guilty of the 2001 killing of journalist and veteran women's rights campaigner Hedayah Sultan al-Salem in a rare attack which shocked many in the small country where women are active in the society compared to some of the neighbouring Muslim conservative Gulf Arab states.
Witnesses at the time said a man stepped out of a vehicle and opened fire at Salem as her car waited at a traffic light in a Kuwait City street. Ali al-Baghli, the lawyer representing the family of the slain editor, said that Azmi apparently attacked her for what he saw as an insult to his Awazm tribe in an article in her al-Majaless magazine in 2000.
She had later apologised for her story about traditional Kuwaiti dances and the origins of the female dancers. "We think his motive was his anger about the article for what he saw as an insult for his tribe. She had apologised for the story," Baghli added.
