A court sentenced 68 people to up to 20 years each over an alleged plot to seize power. The European Union said the trial was marred by procedural irregularities and reports of torture, physical abuse of prisoners and flimsy evidence. Human rights activists accused authorities of extracting confessions under torture. The public prosecutor had urged the death sentence for the alleged masterminds of a plot to overthrow President Teodoro Obiang Nguema, in power since he ousted his uncle in 1979.
