KYRGYZSTAN. EU URGES KYRGYZSTAN TO EXTEND DEATH PENALTY MORATORIUM

the European Union urged Kyrgyzstan to extend a death penalty moratorium until the country passed a law abolishing it.
The European Union said in a statement circulated by the German Embassy in Bishkek that it considers capital punishment to be cruel and inhuman.
The EU called on the Kyrgyz authorities to continue cooperating with the OSCE to carry on reform in the penitentiary system and revise the country's approach to punishment, the statement said.
The European Union also called on Kyrgyzstan to develop an action plan to reduce the number of sentences involving imprisonment by replacing them with alternative forms. Kyrgyzstan imposed a death penalty moratorium in 1998.
