Lee was convicted of gunning down Kankakee patrolman Anthony Samfay, 26, during a traffic stop on October 17, 1996. The Illinois Supreme Court tossed out the death sentence, saying Eric Lee was improperly forced to take a psychiatric evaluation during the sentencing process.
