Judge George Smith sentenced Givemore Muoni Katsande, 41, a veteran of the pre-1980 liberation struggle and retired army general, to death for murdering Tinashe Chakwenya, 25, a police officer, near the town of Marondera in April 2000.Chakwenya had gone to a farm to investigate the beating of a white farmer by a gang of so-called war veterans. Witnesses said Katsande, the veterans' leader, shot the unarmed policeman after he put his hands in the air.
