Liberia acceded to the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights aiming at the Abolition of the Death Penalty.
This treaty was one of a record 83 treaties that Liberia endorsed on the same day. Charles Gyude Bryant, Chairman of the National Transitional Government of Liberia, also endorsed a further 20 international treaties that required ratification.
Liberia’s endorsement of the 103 treaties under Gyude Bryant’s leadership was hailed by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan as “a landmark in Liberia's journey away from a difficult past and towards a more tenable future grounded in the rule of law, respect for human rights and good democratic governance.”
