Lonnie Weeks Jr., 28, white, was executed by lethal injection. He was pronounced dead at 21:06. He had been convicted of killing Jose Cavazos, 50, a policeman of Hispanic origin in 1993. The two sons of the victim, Leslie Cavazos-Almagia and Trevor Cavazos, had pleaded to Governor James Gilmore asking that the death sentence be commuted to life imprisonment. He was the third person to be executed in the State during the year, the 76th since the State resumed executions in 1982. He was the 25th to be executed in the U.S. during the year and No 623 since the death penalty was re-introduced in 1976.
