The Italian Charge d'Affaires, Renato Cianfarani said Italy was offering sanctuary to three former Derg officials at the Italian Embassy "solely on humanitarian grounds," and that Italy would hand them over if Ethiopia pledged the ex-officials would not face capital punishment if tried and convicted. Charges of genocide and crimes against humanity were framed by the Special Prosecutor's Office against these former [unidentified] Derg.
