Manager Chng Teo Heng, 45, businesswoman Agnes Ng Lei Eng, 52, and freelance painter Ng Soon Teck, 44, were given life sentences for the August 2001 kidnapping for ransom of wealthy businessman Tay Teng Joo, 33
In sentencing them to life imprisonment, High Court Judge Kan Ting Chiu said he did not think the death sentence was appropriate because 'no violence or significant injury' was inflicted on Tay.
Conducting her own mitigation during the hearing, Agnes Ng, the mastermind behind the kidnapping said she had nothing to say and in tears, asked the court to sentence her to death. She had twice attempted suicide while on remand.
