Members of Parliament decided to revise the process and outcome of the vote on the abolition of the death penalty.
According to the first deputy speaker Viktor Medvedchuk, who chaired the deputies' meeting that issued the resolution, parliament had received documented evidence indicating that the vote had been falsified.
Parliament voted in favour of abolishing the death penalty on February 22, 2000, in accordance with Ukraine's obligations to the Council of Europe. Deputies began to question the legality of the vote in July 2000.
