Michael Swango,43, pleaded guilty to three murders in New York state. His plea spared him the possibility of the death penalty and blocked any chance of extradition to Zimbabwe. Swango, pleaded guilty to injecting toxins into three patients at a Long Island veterans hospital in 1993. He faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. Swango was wanted in Zimbabwe in connection with the deaths of at least two patients that were under his medical care at a small hospital in that country. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joe Conway said that the plea bargain negotiated with Swango in New York was a package deal that traded life without parole in federal prison in return for taking execution and extradition off the table.
