Military and state security courts in Egypt sentenced more than 90 people to death since militant groups like al-Gama'a al-Islamiya took up arms against the state in 1992, and approximately 70 were executed, Reuters reported in March 2000. Amnesty reported 67 people accused of terrorism put to death in 1992.
Between 1996 and 2001 at least 382 people were sentenced to death in Egypt; an average of 76 people each year, according to Amnesty International. Over the same period at least 114 executions were reported. In 1999 alone at least 108 people, including 12 women, were sentenced to death.
Between November 2001 and November 2002, 58 death sentences were passed and 19 people condemned of ordinary crimes including murder, rape and drug trafficking were executed according to Human Rights Watch 2003 report. Amnesty reported 17 executions for 2002.
