Mo Jifeng, a 27 year-old Internet surfer, was sentenced to death by a Shanghai court for robbing and murdering a friend he met in an Internet chat room. Mo, of northeast China's Liaoning Province, met Ling Ling, a Shanghai resident, in 2001 through the Internet and later in person in Shanghai. It was reported that early in 2002 Mo went to Wenzhou, an economically prosperous city in east China's Zhejiang Province, hoping to start a business, but ended up in bankruptcy. Mo decided to rob Ling Ling whom he believed to be rich, wishing to change his fortune, Xinhua reported. On 23 January 2003, Mo went to Ling Ling's home and strangled her to death, fleeing to Zhejiang with her camera, lap-top computer, mobile phones and other valuables.
