The Shanghai Second Intermediate People's Court condemned a taxi-driver to death for murdering two people and injuring five others.
Shen Yuefei, 24, was found driving wildly in a Shanghai pedestrians-only street early on the morning of 15 October, 2001. He had thrown gasoline and machine oil over himself and his car.
After running over and killing two people and injuring five others, Shen rammed his car into a telegraph pole and set himself alight inside. Passers-by and traffic police rushed to put out the fire and captured him alive.
Shen said he was very depressed the night before because his wife wanted to divorce him and his driving licence had been seized by a traffic policeman for breaking traffic rules. The court said that the driver, frustrated by life and his family, had jeopardized public security and caused serious harm to other people.
