Mohamed Amin Mohd Razali, the al-Ma'unah leader, who was sentenced to death for trying to wage war against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, appealed for the sentence to be reduced to life imprisonment on the basis that "the case was the first of its kind in the country." His counsel Karpal Singh said, in passing the death sentence on Dec 28, last year, High Court Judge Datuk Zulkefli Ahmad Makinuddin was wrong in not considering the case as the first of its kind in the country. Mohamed Amin is only appealing against his death sentence and not his conviction.
