Mohammad Ashraf was publicly executed in the football ground of the provincial capital Jalalabad. He was accused of killing a woman and was thus killed by one of her family members. The execution was witnessed by thousands of spectators and was approved by the Taliban supreme leader Mullah Mohammad Omar. Taliban officials told the crowd prior to the execution that such heavy punishments serve as a deterrence for other criminals.
