Nearly 20 female activists protesting the sentencing of a raped woman to death by stoning under Islamic laws scuffled with police in the Pakistani capital Islamabad.
Eyewitness said the protesters, belonging to an organization demanding the repeal of Islamic laws discriminating against women, were manhandled and temporarily detained by police to prevent them from marching towards the presidential house.
The Alliance for the Repeal of Discriminatory Laws had organized the march to protest the death sentence of rape victim Zafran Bibi of Kohat in the Northwest Frontier Province, who was convicted of adultery despite testifying she was raped by her husband's brother.
Islamic law in Pakistan was introduced by the country's last military ruler, Gen. Muhammad Zia-ul-haq, in the early 1980s to create a constituency for himself among the Islamic clergy and fundamentalist Muslims. Activists have since been demanding these laws be repealed.
