Nguyen Dang Chung, a 19-year-old unemployed man, was sentenced to death by a court in Bac Ninh for the murder of his 80-year-old neighbour in August 2003. Chung's accomplice, Dao Van Cuong, 19, was sentenced to 24 years in prison. Knowing that the old man lived alone, it was alleged the pair entered his house and stabbed and beat him to death before fleeing with 21,000 dong (1.5 dollars). They were arrested five days later.
