Nigerian officials said a second woman has been sentenced to death by stoning by a sharia court for adultery.
Local officials said a court in the remote village of Bakori in Katsina state had sentenced Amina Lawal Kurami on March 22 but reports only reached Abuja on March 25.
Judicial sources in Katsina confirmed the sentence on Amina, who was charged with having a baby out of wedlock.
"The sentence was based on her own confession and the evidence of the baby she had," an official told Reuters by phone.
"The man she said lured her into having sex denied it," the official said. "She has been given 30 days to decide whether to challenge the sentence."
Lawal, who was divorced in late 2000 or 2001, told the court she had been dating a local man, Yahaya Mohammed, for the past 11 months and said that after he promised to marry her she consented to sex. She became pregnant and earlier this year gave birth to a baby girl.
She was arrested by local people from her village on March 4 and brought to court on March 22.
In court, Mohammed admitted a relationship with Lawal but denied that they had had sex .
Sharia judge Nasiru Lawal Bello Dayi acquitted him because Amina could not produce four witnesses as demanded by the Islamic penal code, the officials said.
But the judge ordered the death sentence should be delayed for eight months to allow Amina to breastfeed her baby.
