On April 20, Li Yufui (47) a mainland Chinese citizen and purported master of feng shui - the Chinese art of positioning buildings and furniture to harmonize man with nature - was executed by firing squad after a court rejected his appeal. He was denied a last chance to see his family when Guangdong Provincial Higher People's Court said such arrangements were not provided for in law. He was sentenced to death for the cyanide killings of 3 women and 2 girls in Hong Kong. He was also found guilty of stealing more than $128,000 from his victims last July. The case was the second high-profile trial in China for crimes committed in Hong Kong since the territory reverted from British to Chinese rule in July 1997 (for the other case see 1999 Report). After Li's conviction and sentencing, the Hong Kong Bar Association called for an agreement between mainland and Hong Kong officials on jurisdiction and the transfer of fugitives to ensure that crimes committed in Hong Kong would be tried in the territory. It said the modus operandi of the case was cruel and the consequences serious.
