On August 15, Maj. Gen. Liu Liankun, 58, and Senior Col. Shao Zhengzhong, 56, were executed on charges of spying for Taiwan. Taiwanese sources said Liu provided Taipei with the information about the missiles. He and Shao are believed to have been the most senior Chinese military officers convicted of espionage since 1949. According to a self-proclaimed Taiwan secret agent, Chang Chih-peng, who said he joined Taiwan's intelligence bureau in 1990, others were also arrested. "They were executed by lethal injection on August 15," Chang said of the two officers, fighting back tears. "I never expected something would happen to them."
