On December 9, a verdict was read to 42 people charged with genocidal crimes and other crimes against humanity committed in Rutongo Commune, Kigali-Rural Prefecture, after a mass trial. Three of the accused were sentenced to death, 30 were given life sentences, and 9 were acquitted. A certain Kalinda was given a 20-year jail term instead of the death penalty for being a minor.
