On december: the Iraqi Communist Party accused President Saddam Hussein's government of executing 54 political prisoners late in 1999. A party statement issued in the rebel-held northern Kurdish town of Shaqlawa said 26 prisoners were killed on November 26 and 28 more on December 20. It urged international help to stop further executions.
